Ten Commandments for Auditioners
(Condensed)

By Darren Woods, from Opera News, September, 2004

  • Always sing repertoire that you know well. Always start with your best selection, regardless of what shows are being cast.
  • Work in front of a mirror to rehearse the dramatic aspect and gestures of your audition piece.
  • NEVER sing sick! Never!
  • Type up a tepertoire list to give to judges at your audition.
  • Be pleasant. Remember, we want you to do well.
  • Bring your own accompanist, and have your music and cuts clearly marked.
  • Have professional-looking photos and résumés.
  • Dress well. Men should wear a coat and tie or suit; women, a dress, skirt and blouse, or a suit, unless you are presenting yourself as a "pants" mezzo. For both men and women, get your harir out of your face!
  • Audition for appropriate programs or companies only. You may get only one or two chances, and you want to be sure that you are ready.
  • Don't focus only on getting the job. Set short-term goals that you can achieve if you concentrate in the audition, then pat yourself on the back when you do achieve them.
